The Student Choir of Universitas Indonesia PARAGITA was founded on August 29, 1983 based on the recommendation letter of the director of Universitas Indonesia number 085/SK/R/UI/83. Those who formed it, were A.G. Sudibyo (a student at the Faculty of Social and Political Science), Drs. Max Rukmarata (a lecturer at the Faculty of Humanities), and Liliek Sugiarto (trainer). Prof. Dr. Nugroho Notosusanto, the former director of the Universitas Indonesia then named the choir ‘PARAGITA’ which means Glorious Voices. Besides holding annual concert, Paragita has collaborated with other choirs and orchestras. Some choirs and orchestras that have performed with PARAGITA are the choir of Oxford University Schola Cantorum of England, Vienna Symphony orchestra of Austria, Twilite Orchestra, Nusantara Chamber Orchestra, Cisya Kencana Orchestra, Erwin Gutawa Orchestra and so on. In order to measure its capability, Paragita always joins festivals or competitions. Their international accomplishment was initially achieved in Netherlands International Choir Festival, Arnhem in 1995 (fifth place for Small Mixed Choir Category). Then successfully gained the first place for folksong category of the "1996 Internationaler Chorwettbewerb" in Miltenberg, Germany. Silver medals for both Folklore with instrument accompaniment and Mixed Chamber Choir category at the 2nd Choir Olympic, Busan, Korea in 2002. The choir had also ‘A Winter to Remember’, Indonesia-Japan Concert at Gifu Perfecture Japan in 2003. The last achievements of the choir in the National were 1st prize for Mixed Choir of ITB Choir Festival XXII. Paragita also won the 1st prize of the "46th Internationaler Chorwettbewerb 2009” in Spittal / Drau, Carinthia, Austria, for the category A - Kunstlied (Classic category) and 3rd prize for category B – Volksied (Folksong category). Many trainers have trained PARAGITA in order to improve technical skill, such as the late Liliek Sugiarto, Max Rukmarata, the Late E.L. Pohan, Annette Frambach, Dwi Antono Saputro, Untung P. Siahaan, Aning Katamsi Asmoro, Aida Swenson, Ronald Pohan, and Sukanty Sidartha. Since January 2007, the alumni team headed by Ratna Kusumaningrum (Aning) Katamsi Asmoro has handled PARAGITA. Those who train PARAGITA are Theresia Ramona C.U, Ignatia Rozana Fasinta, Barkah Adji Kasyono, and Agus Yuwono. Drs. A.G. Sudibyo M,Si, the lecturer at the Faculty of Social and Political Science and one of the founders, is now PARAGITA’s adviser.
